The Yellow Belly Damsel (Chrysiptera hemicyanea) is a vibrant and hardy saltwater fish known for its electric blue upper body and striking yellow underside. Native to the Indo-Pacific, this active and resilient species is a popular choice for marine aquariums. Its bold coloration and adaptability make it ideal for both beginner and experienced aquarists. However, like many damselfish, it can be territorial, so careful tankmate selection is recommended.

Care Level:

Ease: Beginner-friendly but requires attention to compatibility due to its semi-aggressive nature.

Water Conditions:

  • Salinity: 1.020–1.025 specific gravity
  • pH: 8.1–8.4
  • Temperature: 74–80°F (23–27°C)

Tank Requirements:

  • Minimum tank size: 30 gallons
  • Provide live rock formations to create hiding spots and territorial boundaries
  • Stable water parameters and regular maintenance are essential for long-term health

Temperament:

Behavior: Semi-aggressive; may become territorial, especially in smaller tanks or as it matures.

Compatibility:

  • Best suited for tanks with other semi-aggressive or fast-moving fish (e.g., tangs, larger wrasses, and dottybacks)
  • Avoid housing with peaceful or slow-moving fish that may be harassed (e.g., gobies, firefish)

Size:

  • Adult Length: 2.5–3 inches (6–8 cm)
  • Growth: Compact but territorial, requiring adequate space

Reef Compatibility:

  • Reef-safe – does not harm corals or most invertebrates
  • May become territorial in smaller reef setups, especially if not housed with appropriately matched tankmates

Additional Notes:

Yellow Belly Damsels are omnivores and thrive on a varied diet of high-quality marine flakes, pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, and brine shrimp. While they are extremely hardy and easy to care for, their territorial nature should be considered when planning tankmate selection. With proper care, they can live 5–8 years, bringing bold color and personality to any marine aquarium.
