Description:
The Mexican Turbo Snail is a highly efficient algae-eating marine invertebrate known for its large, rounded shell and ability to keep aquariums clean. This snail is a workhorse in any reef tank, as it consumes hair algae, film algae, and other detritus. Its peaceful nature and hardiness make it a favorite among aquarists, especially for controlling algae in larger aquariums.

Care Level:

  • Ease: Beginner-friendly and low-maintenance.
  • Water Conditions:
    • pH: 8.1–8.4.
    • Temperature: 72–78°F (22–26°C).
    • Salinity: 1.023–1.025 specific gravity.
  • Tank Requirements:
    • Minimum tank size: 20 gallons.
    • Prefers live rock with plenty of algae to graze on.
    • Ensure stable water parameters and avoid sudden changes in salinity or temperature.

Temperament:

  • Behavior: Peaceful and non-aggressive.
  • Compatibility:
    • Compatible with a wide range of reef-safe fish and invertebrates.
    • Avoid housing with predatory species such as crabs or aggressive fish that may attack or harm the snail.

Size:

  • Adult Size: 2–3 inches (5–7.5 cm).
  • Growth: Compact but robust, suitable for medium to large aquariums.

Reef Compatibility:

  • Completely reef-safe and ideal for reef tanks.
  • Does not harm corals, clams, or other invertebrates, and contributes to overall tank health by controlling algae growth.

Additional Notes:
Mexican Turbo Snails are nocturnal and most active at night, though they may graze during the day if algae is abundant. They require a steady food source, so supplement their diet with algae wafers or seaweed if algae levels are low. Ensure they are not exposed to high water flow areas where they could be knocked over, as they may struggle to right themselves. With proper care, these snails can live for several years, playing a vital role in maintaining a clean and healthy marine aquarium.
