Description:
The Hong Kong Loach, also known as the Butterfly Hillstream Loach, is a unique freshwater fish prized for its flattened body, intricate patterns, and ability to cling to surfaces in fast-moving water. This peaceful algae grazer thrives in well-oxygenated tanks with strong currents, making it an excellent addition to river-style aquariums.

Care Level:

  • Ease: Moderate (requires high oxygen levels and stable water conditions).
  • Water Conditions:
    • Temperature: 68–75°F (20–24°C)
    • pH: 6.5–7.5
    • Hardness: 5–12 dGH
  • Tank Requirements:
    • Minimum 20-gallon tank (larger for groups).
    • Requires high water flow and well-oxygenated water.
    • Prefers smooth rocks, driftwood, and shaded areas.
    • Best kept in mature aquariums with natural algae growth.

Temperament:

  • Behavior:
    • Peaceful, social, and active.
    • Enjoys grazing on algae and biofilm throughout the tank.
  • Compatibility:
    • Ideal for community tanks with small, non-aggressive fish like tetras, rasboras, and other hillstream species.
    • Best kept in groups of 3 or more to encourage natural behavior.
    • Avoid housing with large, aggressive fish.

Size:

  • Adult Size: 2–3 inches (5–7.5 cm)
  • Growth Rate: Slow to moderate, reaching full size in 6–12 months.

Additional Notes:
Hong Kong Loaches thrive on a diet of algae, biofilm, and sinking wafers, but should also be supplemented with blanched vegetables and frozen foods like bloodworms. Due to their natural habitat, they require strong filtration, high oxygen levels, and cooler temperatures for optimal health. Their fascinating suction-like movements and peaceful nature make them a standout choice for river-themed aquariums.
