The Gold Dust Molly is a stunning and hardy livebearer with a striking golden-yellow body complemented by a dramatic black pattern that often darkens towards the tail. This fish’s unique coloration, peaceful nature, and active behavior make it a popular choice for aquarists of all experience levels. Known for their adaptability, Gold Dust Mollies can thrive in both freshwater and slightly brackish environments.

Care Level:

  • Ease: Beginner-friendly.
  • Water Conditions: pH 7.5–8.5; prefers hard, alkaline water.
  • Temperature: 72–82°F (22–28°C).
  • Tank Requirements:
    • Minimum tank size: 20 gallons.
    • Requires plenty of open swimming space, as well as plants and decorations for hiding and grazing.
    • Can tolerate slightly brackish water if gradually acclimated.
    • Regular water changes are essential to maintain water quality.

Temperament:

  • Behavior: Peaceful, social, and active.
  • Compatibility: Excellent for community tanks. Pairs well with other non-aggressive species like guppies, platies, swordtails, tetras, and corydoras. Avoid aggressive or fin-nipping species. Best kept in groups of 3 or more.

Size:

  • Adult Length: 3–5 inches (7–13 cm).
  • Growth: Males are typically smaller and slimmer, while females are larger and fuller-bodied.

Additional Notes:
Gold Dust Mollies are omnivores that thrive on a balanced diet of high-quality flakes, algae wafers, and blanched vegetables such as spinach or zucchini. They are prolific breeders, and females can give birth to live fry every 4–6 weeks, so a breeding or grow-out tank may be necessary if reproduction is not desired in the main aquarium. With proper care and a stable environment, they can live for 3–5 years, adding beauty and activity to your tank!
