The Four Stripe Damsel (Dascyllus melanurus) is a hardy and active saltwater fish, easily recognized by its bold black and white striped pattern. Native to the Indo-Pacific, this striking fish adds energy and contrast to any marine aquarium. Known for its adaptability and resilience, the Four Stripe Damsel is an excellent choice for beginner saltwater aquarists. However, due to its territorial nature, careful tankmate selection is recommended.

Care Level:

Ease: Beginner-friendly but requires consideration for compatibility due to its semi-aggressive nature.

Water Conditions:

  • Salinity: 1.020–1.025 specific gravity
  • pH: 8.1–8.4
  • Temperature: 72–78°F (22–26°C)

Tank Requirements:

  • Minimum tank size: 30 gallons
  • Provide plenty of live rock to create hiding spots and territorial zones
  • Requires stable water parameters and regular maintenance

Temperament:

Behavior: Semi-aggressive, especially as it matures. Can become territorial toward smaller or more passive tankmates.

Compatibility:

  • Best suited for larger aquariums with other semi-aggressive fish (e.g., tangs, larger wrasses, and dottybacks)
  • Avoid housing with peaceful or slow-moving fish that may be bullied (e.g., gobies, firefish)

Size:

  • Adult Length: 3–4 inches (7–10 cm)
  • Growth: Compact but territorial, requiring adequate space

Reef Compatibility:

  • Reef-safe – does not harm corals or most invertebrates
  • May become territorial within a reef environment, especially in smaller tanks

Additional Notes:

Four Stripe Damsels are omnivores and thrive on a varied diet of high-quality marine flakes, pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, and brine shrimp. While they are extremely hardy, their territorial behavior should be considered when choosing tankmates. With proper care and a well-planned setup, these lively fish can live 5–8 years, making them a durable and visually striking addition to a marine aquarium.
