The Dalmatian Molly is a striking and hardy livebearer known for its unique black-and-white speckled pattern, reminiscent of a Dalmatian dog. These peaceful fish are active swimmers that thrive in freshwater or slightly brackish environments, making them a popular choice for beginner and experienced aquarists alike. With their lively personalities and attractive appearance, they bring life and energy to community tanks.
Care Level:
- Ease: Beginner-friendly.
- Water Conditions: pH 7.5–8.5; prefers hard, alkaline water.
- Temperature: 72–82°F (22–28°C).

Tank Requirements:
- Minimum tank size: 20 gallons.
- Requires plenty of swimming space with plants and decorations for hiding.
- Can tolerate slightly brackish water if acclimated gradually.
- Ensure stable water quality and regular water changes to prevent disease.
Temperament:
- Behavior: Peaceful and social; best kept in groups of 3 or more.
- Compatibility: Excellent community fish, compatible with other peaceful species like platies, guppies, swordtails, and corydoras. Avoid aggressive tankmates or fin-nipping species.
Size:
- Adult Length: 3–5 inches (7–13 cm).
- Growth: Males tend to be slightly smaller and slimmer than females.

Dalmatian Mollies are omnivorous and require a varied diet to thrive, including high-quality flakes, algae wafers, and occasional blanched vegetables like spinach or zucchini. These livebearers are prolific breeders, so providing separate space or a breeding tank may be necessary if reproduction is not desired in the main aquarium. They are highly adaptable and easy to care for, making them an excellent addition to most community tanks. With proper care, they can live for 3–5 years or more!
