The Crested Gecko, also known as the Eyelash Gecko, is a popular and charismatic reptile known for its unique appearance, gentle nature, and ease of care. Native to New Caledonia, these geckos are recognized for their fringed "crests" that run along their heads, eyes, and necks, giving them a distinctive, attractive look. Crested Geckos are arboreal, meaning they prefer to live in trees and need vertical space in their enclosures, making them an ideal reptile for those with limited horizontal space.

Features:

  • Unique Appearance: The Crested Gecko is most known for the frilly crest of skin that runs along its head, eyes, and back, giving it a dramatic, "eyelash" effect. Their smooth, textured skin comes in a range of colors, from browns and greens to yellows and reds, making each gecko unique in appearance.
  • Docile Nature: Crested Geckos are known for their calm and gentle temperament. They are non-aggressive and can tolerate handling, though they are generally more active at night. Their friendly disposition makes them a great choice for reptile beginners and families.
  • Small to Medium Size: Crested Geckos typically grow to 8-10 inches in length, including their tail. Their relatively small size makes them easy to house and care for in a variety of enclosures.
  • Low Maintenance: With relatively simple care requirements, Crested Geckos are easy to look after. They thrive in a well-maintained environment and are generally low-maintenance compared to other reptiles.

Care Information:

  • Diet: Crested Geckos are omnivores and eat both insects and fruit. We currently feed our Crested Geckos crickets, which they eagerly hunt and catch. In addition, they are fed Zoo Med Crested Gecko Food, a specially formulated powdered diet that provides all the essential nutrients they need. This convenient diet can be mixed with water to create a nutritious paste that Crested Geckos find irresistible.
  • Housing: Crested Geckos are arboreal and require an enclosure with plenty of vertical space. A minimum 20-gallon tall tank is recommended, with branches, vines, and other climbing structures to encourage natural behavior. The enclosure should also provide hiding spots where the gecko can feel secure.
  • Temperature: The ideal temperature range for a Crested Gecko is 72-80°F (22-27°C) during the day. At night, temperatures can drop slightly to around 65-70°F (18-21°C). A heat source, such as a heat pad, can be used to regulate temperature if necessary.
  • Humidity: Crested Geckos require 50-60% humidity. This can be maintained by misting the enclosure daily and using a substrate that retains moisture, such as coconut husk or sphagnum moss. A humidity gauge can help ensure the correct levels are maintained.
  • Grooming: Crested Geckos do not need grooming, but their enclosure should be kept clean and free of waste. Regular misting is also essential for hydration and to aid in the shedding process.

Lifespan: With proper care, Crested Geckos can live up to 15-20 years, making them a long-term companion in your reptile collection.

Crested Geckos are beautiful, friendly, and easy to care for, making them one of the best reptiles for beginners and experienced reptile keepers alike. Their charming appearance, docile nature, and simple care requirements make them an excellent choice for anyone looking to add a unique and engaging reptile to their home. Whether you're new to reptiles or looking to expand your collection, a Crested Gecko will provide years of enjoyment and fascination.
