Description:
The Otocinclus Catfish, also known as the Oto Cat or Dwarf Suckerfish, is a small yet highly efficient algae-eating fish, making it a fantastic addition to freshwater aquariums. With its peaceful nature and ability to keep tanks clean by grazing on algae, the Otocinclus is a favorite among aquarists looking for a natural way to maintain water quality. Its small size, active personality, and schooling behavior make it an excellent choice for planted and community tanks.

Care Level:

  • Ease: Easy to Moderate (best for stable, well-established tanks).
  • Water Conditions:
    • Temperature: 72–79°F (22–26°C)
    • pH: 6.5–7.5
    • Hardness: 4–12 dGH
  • Tank Requirements:
    • Minimum 10-gallon tank (larger preferred for groups).
    • Requires a mature aquarium with plenty of biofilm and algae growth.
    • Well-oxygenated water with a gentle filter and moderate flow.
    • Prefers a planted setup with driftwood and smooth surfaces for algae grazing.

Temperament:

  • Behavior:
    • Peaceful and social; thrives in groups of 5 or more.
    • Constantly active, grazing on algae-covered surfaces.
  • Compatibility:
    • Ideal for community tanks with peaceful fish like tetras, rasboras, guppies, and corydoras.
    • Avoid housing with aggressive or large predatory fish.

Size:

  • Adult Size: 1.5–2 inches (3.8–5 cm)
  • Growth Rate: Slow to moderate, depending on diet and environment.

Additional Notes:
Otocinclus Catfish require a steady supply of algae in their diet, but if natural algae is insufficient, supplement with blanched vegetables (zucchini, spinach) and algae wafers. Because they are sensitive to poor water conditions, regular water changes and a stable environment are crucial. Keeping them in groups helps reduce stress and encourages natural behaviors.
